My work is predominately in enamels on copper. I use vitreous enamels which are heated to around 800 centigrade in a kiln. This causes the specially produced glass powder to melt and adhere to the copper backing. Designs are built up in layers and one of my favourite techniques is sgraffito which involves drawing in the enamel powder to reveal the colour of the previous layer. The piece is then fired to permanently fix the design.
I began working in these materials mainly to make jewellery. In recent years however, I have expanded my interests to include decorating up-cycled objects such as vases and boxes with enamelled panels and creating larger mixed media sculptural pieces.
